Chapter 4 - SARAH’S MESSAGESarah called at noon.

I didn't answer.
She called again.
Then again.
Finally, a text arrived.
I gave her the padlock. But you don't know why.
I stared at it.
Another message.
Please meet me alone.
I typed:
No.
Her response came instantly.
Then Linda wins.
Twenty minutes later, Sarah sent a photograph.
A little girl.
Maybe eight.
Brown hair.
Missing front tooth.
Standing beside Sarah.
I recognized her.
Emily.
Sarah’s daughter.
Then another photograph arrived.
Emily getting off a school bus.
Taken from inside a vehicle.
My stomach tightened.
Mom sent me this yesterday morning.
Another message:
She told me if I didn't help her, she'd take Emily from me.
I called.
Sarah answered immediately.
“Clara?”
“Explain.”
She started crying.
“Not on the phone.”
“Why?”
“Because she listens.”
“To what?”
“Everything.”
We met at a crowded coffee shop.
Sarah sat in the farthest corner wearing sunglasses.
“You look ridiculous,” I said.
“I know.”
“Start talking.”
She removed them.
Her eyes were swollen.
“Mom has controlled us our entire lives.”
“I know that part.”
“No. You know the version she lets outsiders see.”
Sarah folded her hands.
“When I was sixteen, I tried to move in with Aunt Caroline.”
I had never heard of Caroline.
“Who?”
“My father’s sister.”
“Ryan never mentioned her.”
“Exactly.”
Sarah continued.
“Mom told everyone Caroline was unstable. Dangerous.”
“Was she?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Sarah stared at the table.
“She disappeared from our lives.”
“How?”
“Mom destroyed her.”
The words sounded dramatic.
Then Sarah explained.
Linda had accused Caroline of stealing from Thomas’s company.
Police investigation.
Civil lawsuit.
Family humiliation.
Caroline lost her job.
Moved away.
Years later, Sarah discovered the financial records used against Caroline were false.
“Who forged them?”
“I don't know.”
“Does Ryan know?”
Sarah looked away.
“Sarah.”
“Yes.”
Of course.
My husband knew.
Another secret.
“Why did you give Linda the padlock?”
Sarah's hands shook.
“She told me she was putting Noah in the kennel for five minutes.”
“You believed her?”
“No.”
That answer surprised me.
“Then why?”
“Because I needed you to see.”
I stared.
“What?”
Sarah wiped her eyes.
“I've tried telling Ryan for years that Mom is getting worse.”
“Getting worse?”
“She’s always been controlling. But after Dad died, something changed.”
Sarah leaned closer.
“She stopped hiding it.”
“You could have called me.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
I remembered.
A missed call.
Sarah.
I never returned it.
“She threatened Emily?”
Sarah nodded.
“Mom has been paying part of my custody attorney fees.”
Sarah was divorced.
Messy custody battle.
“I’m financially dependent on her.”
“And she uses that.”
“Yes.”
“But why Noah?”
Sarah looked terrified.
“Because of you.”
“Me?”
“She hates you.”
“I gathered that.”
“No.”
Sarah shook her head.
“She is afraid of you.”
I almost laughed.
“Linda isn't afraid of me.”
“She is now.”
“Why?”
“Because Thomas changed something before he died.”
My skin prickled.
“What?”
“His will.”
I stopped.
Sarah continued.
“Mark found an old email from Dad’s attorney. Dad wanted part of the Hale property placed in trust.”
“For whom?”
Sarah looked directly at me.
“For the grandchildren.”
Noah.
Emily.
Others.
“Linda told us Dad left everything to her.”
“She lied.”
“How much?”
“We don't know.”
Then I remembered the blue folder.
Ryan signing documents.
“Ryan knows.”
Sarah nodded.
“How long?”
“Three weeks.”
My chest tightened.
Three weeks.
My husband had known his mother might have stolen his father’s estate from her own grandchildren.
And said nothing.
“Why would locking Noah in a kennel help her?”
Sarah shook her head.
“That part doesn't make sense.”
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked down.
Went pale.
“What?”
She turned the screen toward me.
A photograph.
Noah.
Standing beside Mia’s front window.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
Underneath:
Tell Clara to stop digging.
I was out of the chair before Sarah finished reading.
I called Mia.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Again.
Then finally—
“Mia?”
A man answered.
“Clara?”
I stopped breathing.
It was Mark.
Ryan’s older brother.
“Why do you have Mia’s phone?”
“Because you need to get here.”
“What happened?”
“Noah is safe.”
“Where is Mia?”
Silence.
“Mark.”
“She’s unconscious.”
The coffee shop vanished around me.
“What happened?”
“I found her at the bottom of the stairs.”
My knees weakened.
“And Clara?”
May you like
“Yes?”
“The front door wasn't forced.”
