Chapter 21 - THE DOGNoah wanted a dog.

I said no.

Repeatedly.

Then his therapist suggested it might help him reclaim the symbol that frightened him.

We visited a rescue shelter.

Noah chose the ugliest dog there.

A scruffy brown mutt with one ear permanently folded.

“His name is Rocket.”

“No.”

“Please?”

“Noah.”

Rocket licked my hand.

Traitor.

We adopted him.

The first night, Rocket’s crate sat open in Noah’s room.

Noah stared at it.

Then crawled inside voluntarily.

My heart stopped.

He sat there with Rocket.

Door open.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“See?”

He smiled.

“Cages are different when you can leave.”

I had to sit down.

My seven-year-old had just explained trauma better than most adults.
