Chapter 14 - MARK’S GAMEMark vanished before police could arrest him for evidence tampering.

He left one message.

Ask Linda why she protected me for six years.

Linda finally broke.

Not emotionally.

Strategically.

She wanted a deal.

Mark had been blackmailing her.

He knew she stole from the trusts.

She knew he had been with Thomas the night he died.

Neither could expose the other.

“What happened that night?”

Linda stared at the table.

“Mark confronted Thomas.”

“About being excluded?”

“Yes.”

“They fought.”

“Physically?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Thomas told Mark he was going to police.”

“For the stolen money.”

“Yes.”

“Did Mark poison him?”

Linda closed her eyes.

“I saw Mark put something into Thomas’s whiskey.”

My stomach turned.

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“And did nothing?”

“I didn't know what it was.”

“After Thomas died?”

“I knew.”

“Why didn't you tell police?”

Her answer came quietly.

“Because Mark had records proving I stole millions.”

I stared at her.

“You let your husband’s killer walk to save your money.”

Linda looked at me.

“No.”

Then:

“I let my son walk.”

There it was.

Not bloodline.

Not justice.

Possession.

Mark was still her child.

She protected him.

Then punished everyone else for the cost of that choice.
