Chapter 9 - LILY AND REBECCAYears later, Rebecca asked to apologize directly.
Lily was thirteen.
Daniel let Lily choose.
She agreed to one supervised meeting.
Rebecca did not say:
I was stressed.
Or:
Grandpa made me.
She said:
“I hurt you because I was afraid of what would happen to me if I told your grandfather no.”
Lily looked at her.
“That wasn’t my problem.”
Rebecca cried.
“No.”
Good answer.
Lily asked:
“Why did you say I was faking?”
Rebecca lowered her eyes.
“Because if people believed you, they would look at me.”
Lily nodded.
That made sense to her.
Not acceptable.
Understandable.
At the end Rebecca asked for forgiveness.
Lily replied:
“I don’t hate you.”
Rebecca waited.
