Chapter 3 - REBECCA TALKSRebecca contacted Melissa before police contacted her again.
She wanted a lawyer.
And a deal.
Daniel refused to speak with her privately.
Good.
Rebecca eventually admitted part of what happened.
She went upstairs searching for Anna’s box because Robert told her it contained outdated copies that “could cause unnecessary trouble.”
Why help him?
Debt.
Rebecca owed almost $190,000 after a failed boutique business.
Robert had been covering payments.
He told her if the trust audit destroyed Mercer Property Group, the help stopped.
So Rebecca obeyed.
Then Lily entered.
She saw Rebecca holding documents.
Rebecca panicked.
Lily grabbed one page and ran.
Robert caught her near the laundry room.
Then everything escalated.
Rebecca insisted she never intended to injure Lily.
Daniel did not care about intention as much as she wanted him to.
“You held her face.”
Rebecca cried.
“I was trying to stop her screaming.”
“You held a five-year-old’s face so she couldn’t scream.”
Silence.
Accuracy was cruel enough.
Then Rebecca said something important.
“Mom planned the story.”
Daniel looked up.
“What story?”
“That Lily lies.”
His stomach dropped.
Linda had been telling relatives for months that Lily was becoming manipulative.
Attention-seeking.
Dramatic.
Daniel remembered.
He had laughed at some of it.
“She’s five.”
Linda always answered:
“Exactly. That’s when it starts.”
Now he understood.
They were pre-damaging Lily’s credibility.
