She had hidden it in the spare-tire compartment.
Most documents were gone.
But one envelope survived beneath the fabric lining.
Addressed to Daniel.
Anna’s handwriting.
He opened it alone.
Anna wrote:
I know you love your parents. I’m not asking you to stop. I’m asking you to stop confusing love with trust.
Daniel cried.
Then:
If Lily ever says she is afraid of someone in this family, believe the fear first. Investigate the facts second.
He had to stop reading.
Anna had known the culture she was leaving her daughter inside.
