Chapter 8 - ARTHUR'S SECRETMonths later Evelyn discovered her father had hidden something from her.

Not financial evidence.

Fear.

Arthur had known for nearly a year that Daniel's company was deteriorating.

He suspected Daniel might try to use Evelyn's board position.

Yet he didn't warn her immediately.

Evelyn was furious.

“Why?”

Arthur answered:

“Because I thought you'd defend him.”

“So you decided for me?”

“Yes.”

“That sounds exactly like Daniel.”

Arthur went silent.

The comparison hurt.

It was supposed to.

Evelyn loved her father.

That didn't make his paternalism acceptable.

Arthur apologized.

Not:

I was protecting you.

Not:

You'll understand someday.

Simply:

“I should have told you.”

Their relationship improved because Evelyn learned something crucial.

Escaping one controlling relationship didn't mean every person on her side automatically became right.

She could set boundaries with enemies.

And with people she loved.

Especially with people she loved.
