Chapter 4 - MARGARET'S DEALMargaret wanted immunity.

Complete immunity.
She offered documents.
Emails.
Account passwords.
Meeting notes.
Rebecca's testimony.
In exchange, she wanted protection from prosecution.
She didn't get everything.
Evidence showed Margaret had knowingly approved some transactions.
She had not invented the scheme.
But she had protected it.
Her cooperation mattered.
So did her conduct.
One afternoon Margaret requested to speak with Evelyn.
Evelyn almost refused.
Then agreed.
Neutral office.
Attorneys nearby.
Margaret entered without royal-blue velvet.
Gray trousers.
Plain blouse.
She looked smaller.
“I suppose you've come to enjoy this.”
Evelyn stared.
“Enjoy what?”
“Watching me fall.”
“No.”
Margaret seemed disappointed by the answer.
Hatred would've given her something familiar to fight.
Evelyn continued.
“I don't care enough anymore.”
That hurt more.
Margaret looked away.
Then asked:
“Why did you put that disgusting napkin in my mouth?”
Evelyn almost laughed.
“You really want to start there?”
Margaret said nothing.
“You watched your son split my scalp open.”
“I was shocked.”
“You told me to know my place.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
Evelyn waited.
Margaret finally whispered:
“I was cruel.”
No excuse followed.
That surprised Evelyn.
But one accurate sentence wasn't redemption.
It was merely accuracy.

A beginning, perhaps.
Nothing more.
