Chapter 3 - WHY DANIEL HIT HERDaniel's explanation changed four times.

First:

Evelyn provoked him.

Then:

He was under unbearable financial stress.

Then:

He thought Evelyn had betrayed confidential company information.

Finally:

He lost control.

That final version was closest.

But Evelyn's therapist later asked an uncomfortable question.

“What did he lose control of?”

Evelyn frowned.

“His anger.”

“Or his expectation of obedience?”

That stayed with her.

Daniel didn't strike Evelyn when she discovered the fraud.

He struck her when she publicly said no.

The bowl wasn't about soup.

Or money.

Or embarrassment.

It was the moment Daniel discovered that the woman beside him no longer responded to command.

That didn't excuse anything.

It explained the timing.

And understanding timing helped Evelyn recognize earlier warning signs she'd dismissed.
