Rebecca confronted Daniel.

Margaret helped bury the termination.
The official explanation became voluntary resignation.
Rebecca disappeared because she was frightened.
Then six weeks before the dinner, Margaret found Daniel's contingency documents.
If regulators arrived, Margaret would become the architect of the transfers.
She panicked.
She contacted Rebecca.
Not from conscience.

That distinction fascinated Evelyn.
Margaret had done one right thing for the wrong reason.

Reality refused to organize people neatly into heroes and villains.
Margaret could expose fraud and still abuse Evelyn.
Rebecca could help bring down Daniel and still admit she'd stayed silent too long.
Evelyn herself could fight back and still regret stuffing the napkin into Margaret's mouth.
