Chapter 5 - NORTHSTARThe financial press expected Evelyn to seize Whitmore & Cole.

She didn't.

That surprised everyone.

Northstar controlled enough secured debt to force major restructuring.

Arthur recommended replacing Daniel, taking equity and retaining the strongest divisions.

Evelyn refused to make the decision alone.

“Why?”

“Because then Daniel gets to spend the rest of his life saying I destroyed his company for revenge.”

Arthur smiled.

“Does it matter what he says?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“Because I don't trust myself to make a purely financial decision about something this personal.”

Arthur became quiet.

That was perhaps the moment he became proudest.

Power was easy to use when angry.

Harder to limit.

Independent restructuring specialists were appointed.

Whitmore survived.

Smaller.

Different leadership.

Daniel lost executive control because of governance failures and financial misconduct.

Not because Evelyn demanded his chair.

That distinction mattered to her.

She wanted consequences tied to actions.

Not vengeance tied to humiliation.
