Chapter 8 - THE TRIALClaire hated the courtroom.

Everyone examined her fall.

Her marriage.

Her pregnancy.

Her finances.

Her relationship with Victoria.

Defense counsel questioned whether she had exaggerated years of conflict after learning how valuable her unborn child's trust interest was.

Claire remained calm.

Then the footage played.

The courtroom watched Victoria's hands push the wheelchair.

Nothing Claire said afterward mattered as much as those seconds.

Maria testified about the garage.

Richard testified about what he saw.

Ethan testified too.

That was the hardest.

He looked toward his mother.

Then told the truth.

Not because he stopped loving her.

Because love didn't alter evidence.

Victoria was ultimately convicted on serious charges arising from the staircase attack, while legal disputes surrounding the earlier garage incident remained more complicated.

Claire didn't celebrate.

She went home.

Removed her shoes.

Sat in the nursery.

And cried.

People expected justice to feel like victory.

Sometimes it simply felt like an ending.
