Chapter 2 - THE FIRST ACCIDENTThe witness was Maria Torres, one of the Ashford household employees.
She had been cleaning a storage corridor when Claire broke her leg.
Maria remembered Victoria entering the garage alone approximately fifteen minutes before Claire arrived.
Then she heard metal striking concrete.
When she looked through the service doorway, Victoria was crouched beside the mobility cart.
Maria hadn't understood what she was doing.
Later Claire crashed.
Maria said nothing.
Victoria controlled staffing.
Maria needed her job.
But after the staircase incident, Richard's security team began interviewing everyone.
Maria finally spoke.
“I thought the first accident was my imagination.”
Richard asked:
“And now?”
Maria cried.
“Now I think Mrs. Ashford did something to that cart.”
The cart was recovered.
Its damaged braking mechanism had never been discarded.
An independent inspection discovered deliberate interference could not immediately be ruled out.
It wasn't proof by itself.
But it changed the investigation.
Then the staircase memory card was examined.
The local buffer had survived.
There was no audio.
It didn't need any.
Victoria stood behind Claire.
Claire tried to stop the chair.
Victoria leaned forward.
Then shoved.
Clear.
Deliberate.
No accident.
Ethan watched the footage once.
Then walked into a hospital bathroom and vomited.
When he returned, Claire was awake.
“My mother tried to kill you.”
Claire looked at him.
“Yes.”
He sat beside her.
“I defended her.”
“For years.”
“Yes.”
“I need something from you now.”
“Anything.”
“Don't make me comfort you for discovering who she is.”
Ethan looked ashamed.
Claire continued:
“I am lying here pregnant with another injury. I cannot carry your grief too.”
He nodded.
“You're right.”
For once, Ethan did not ask Claire to manage the consequences of his mother's behavior.
He left the room.
Called his attorney.

And gave them everything he knew.
