Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN BLACKVictoria was arrested and questioned.

She denied attempted murder.

She claimed she had reached for the wheelchair after Claire accidentally rolled forward.

The footage contradicted her.

Then she changed explanations.

Claire provoked her.

Then:

She panicked.

Then:

She never intended Claire to fall all the way down.

Each version made the previous one weaker.

Her attorneys eventually stopped allowing spontaneous statements.

Richard never visited her.

Claire didn't either.

Ethan did once.

Victoria looked at her son through the visitation partition.

“You're choosing her over your mother.”

Ethan stared.

“No.”

Victoria waited.

“I'm choosing reality over you.”

Her expression hardened.

“She has poisoned you.”

Ethan almost laughed.

Even now.

Claire was still responsible.

“Mom, I watched you push her.”

Victoria said nothing.

“My child could have died.”

Silence.

“You could have killed my wife.”

Victoria finally whispered:

“I was protecting what your father built.”

Ethan stared.

There it was.

Not remorse.

Justification.

He stood.

“You pushed your grandchild down thirty stairs for a company.”

Victoria's eyes filled.

May you like

Ethan left.

It was the last private conversation they had for years.
