That surprised him.
“I testified against my mother.”
“I know.”
“I believe you.”

“What else can I do?”
Claire looked at him.
“Understand why that isn't enough.”
Ethan sat quietly.
For years, Victoria insulted Claire.
He minimized it.
Victoria interfered with their marriage.
He called it concern.
Victoria entered their house without permission.
He gave her a key again after Claire took it away.
When Claire said Victoria frightened her, Ethan answered:
“She'd never actually hurt you.”
Then Victoria did.
Trust wasn't broken only on the staircase.
It had been weakened one dismissal at a time.
Ethan began therapy.
Not as a trick to save the marriage.
Because he needed to understand why his mother's discomfort had always mattered more to him than Claire's boundaries.
Claire watched actions.
Not promises.
