Chapter 6 - THE VERDICTThe trial lasted three weeks.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Vanessa was charged with financial exploitation, fraud, interference with medical care, conspiracy, and child neglect.
Daniel faced charges related to neglect and financial misconduct.
His attorney argued that Daniel had been manipulated.
The prosecutor agreed.
But manipulation didn't erase responsibility.
Daniel had received warnings.
He had received photographs.
He had received messages.
He had been told Emily was seriously ill.
He chose not to investigate.
The final recording was played.
Vanessa's voice filled the courtroom.
“If Emily gets better, Claire gets control again.”
Daniel's voice followed.
“What if she doesn't?”
Vanessa paused.
Then:
“By then, it'll be too late.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Daniel looked devastated.
The judge ordered a recess.
When the verdict came, Vanessa was found guilty on multiple counts.
Daniel was also found guilty.
The court sentenced Vanessa to prison.
Daniel received probation, restitution, mandatory counseling, and restrictions concerning Emily's estate.
He had cooperated with investigators.
That reduced his punishment.
It did not erase his guilt.
After the verdict, Daniel approached Claire.
“I don't expect you to forgive me.”
Claire looked at him.
“Good.”
He nodded.
“I just want to know one thing.”
“What?”
“Did Emily hate me?”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
Daniel looked shocked.
“She didn't?”
“No.”
Claire took out Emily's letter.
“She thought you didn't know.”
Daniel started crying.
Claire handed him the letter.
He read it.
Daddy, I miss you.
He couldn't continue.
Claire took the letter back.
“She loved you.”
Daniel whispered:
“I don't deserve that.”
“No.”
He nodded.
“But she gave it anyway.”
They stood in silence.
Then Daniel walked away.
Claire watched him disappear.
She didn't feel victorious.
She felt tired.
