Chapter 3 - THE MONEY BEHIND THE SILENCEThe financial records revealed a pattern.
Every time Daniel received money, Vanessa sent him another message.
Don't go home.
Claire is making things worse.
Emily is safe.
The messages had continued for months.
Daniel had never questioned them.
He had trusted Vanessa because he wanted to believe that leaving was temporary.
But Michael found something else.
A payment of one hundred thousand dollars had been made three weeks before Emily's condition became critical.
The description read:
Keep Daniel away.
Claire stared at the screen.
“That's enough.”
Michael nodded.
“It establishes intent.”
Daniel was brought back for questioning.
This time, he didn't pretend.
“I knew Vanessa was giving me money.”
“Did you know why?”
“She said it was to help me start over.”
“Did she tell you to stay away from Emily?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She said Claire was poisoning her against me.”
“And you believed that?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I was angry.”
Michael leaned forward.
“Your daughter was sick.”
“I didn't know how sick.”
“You could have found out.”
Daniel said nothing.
Michael placed the hospital photograph on the table.
Emily looked exhausted.
Daniel stared at it.
“When was this?”
“Three months before she died.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I never saw it.”
“You were sent it.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
Michael showed him the message.
Claire had sent the photograph.
Daniel stared.
The message was clear.
Emily needs you.
Daniel's face collapsed.
“I didn't open it.”
Michael didn't respond.
Daniel began crying.
“I thought it was another argument.”
“No.”
“I thought Claire wanted me back.”
“She wanted you to see your daughter.”
Daniel covered his face.
The interrogation continued for two hours.
Daniel admitted accepting the money.
He admitted staying away.
He admitted believing Vanessa.
But he insisted he hadn't known about the altered medical records.
Michael believed him.
Partially.
Because ignorance did not erase responsibility.
Meanwhile, Claire met the doctor who had treated Emily.
He admitted the medical records had been changed.
Vanessa had asked him to modify dates.
To make Emily's symptoms appear less severe.
Claire stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked ashamed.
“She threatened me.”
“With what?”
“She said she'd destroy my career.”
“You changed a child's records because you were afraid of her?”
“Yes.”
Claire stood.
“You should have been more afraid of losing that child's life.”
The doctor looked down.
“I know.”
The evidence was growing.
Bank transfers.
Forged documents.
Altered medical records.
Threatening messages.
And Emily's letter.
Michael believed they had enough for criminal charges.
But he wanted one final piece.
Proof that Vanessa knew Emily's condition was dangerous.
They found it in hospital security footage.
Vanessa entered the medical records office.
She carried a folder.
She stayed inside for eleven minutes.
When she left, the records had been changed.
Claire watched the footage.
Her hands shook.
“What date?”
Michael told her.
Claire recognized it immediately.
It was the same day she had asked Vanessa whether Emily was okay.
Vanessa had smiled.
“She’s doing great.”
Claire remembered believing her.
Now she knew.
It had been a lie.
That night, Claire returned home.
She stood before Emily's portrait.
“I should have known.”
She touched the frame.
“But I know now.”
Then she made a decision.
She would not allow Emily's death to become a family secret.
She would take everything to court.
Every lie.
Every payment.
Every forged signature.
Every altered record.
Every person who had remained silent.
And Daniel would have to face his part too.
