Chapter 4 - THE RECORDINGMichael found the recording in an old cloud account.
It was dated five months before Emily died.
Vanessa was speaking to Daniel.
Claire listened through headphones.
Vanessa's voice was calm.
“If Claire finds out how sick Emily is, she'll come back.”
Daniel asked:
“What do you want me to do?”
“Stay away.”
“What about Emily?”
“She'll be fine.”
Daniel hesitated.
“And the trust?”
Vanessa replied:
“We'll handle it.”
Claire removed the headphones.
She stared at Michael.
“He knew about the trust.”
“Yes.”
“But did he know about the money?”
“We're still investigating.”
Daniel was confronted.
He listened to the recording.
His face went pale.
“I don't remember that.”
“You were there.”
“I was drunk.”
“That doesn't erase the conversation.”
Daniel looked at the table.
“What did she mean by ‘we’ll handle it’?”
Michael answered:
“The inheritance.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I never planned to take Emily's money.”
“But you accepted Vanessa's money.”
Daniel couldn't answer.
He finally whispered:
“I was trying to start over.”
Michael stared at him.
“You started over while your daughter was fighting to stay alive.”
Daniel began crying.
The truth was becoming impossible to escape.
He had not killed Emily.
But he had abandoned her.
He had accepted money.
He had believed lies because they were convenient.
And when Claire begged him to come home, he chose not to.
That was his responsibility.
Meanwhile, Vanessa hired an attorney.
She claimed Claire was fabricating everything.
She said the trust amendment was legitimate.
She said the payments to Daniel were personal.
She said Emily's death was a medical tragedy.
But the evidence contradicted every statement.
The prosecutor presented the timeline.
Vanessa obtained access to Emily.
Vanessa altered medical records.
Vanessa paid Daniel.
Vanessa changed the trust.
Vanessa threatened witnesses.
Then Emily died.
The prosecutor said:
“This was not one bad decision. It was a series of deliberate choices.”
Claire sat silently.
Daniel sat across the room.
He didn't look at her.
Vanessa did.
Her expression was no longer confident.
She looked frightened.
After the hearing, Vanessa approached Claire.
“You ruined everything.”
Claire stared at her.
“No.”
Vanessa's voice shook.
“You think you're better than me?”
“No.”
“You took everything from me.”
Claire answered quietly:
“You took my daughter from herself.”
Vanessa froze.
Claire continued:
“You took her chance to get treatment.”
“You took her chance to see her father.”
“You took her chance to grow up.”
Vanessa began crying.
Claire walked away.
