Chapter 2 - THE LETTER THAT CHANGED EVERYTHINGClaire sat beneath the memorial and unfolded the paper.

Emily's handwriting was uneven.
Some letters were too large.
Others leaned sideways.
Claire recognized every line.
The first sentence broke her heart.
Daddy, I miss you.
She stopped reading.
For several seconds, she couldn't breathe.
Then she continued.
Daddy, Mommy says you are busy.
Claire wiped her eyes.
Emily had believed that.
She hadn't known Daniel had been told.
She hadn't known he had ignored the warnings.
The next sentence was worse.
Vanessa says you don't want to talk to me.
Claire froze.
“What?”
She read it again.
Vanessa had told Emily that Daniel didn't want her.
Claire continued.
She says Daddy is angry because I am sick.
Claire's hands trembled.
Emily had never been angry at Daniel.
She had defended him.
Even when Claire was furious.
Even when Daniel stopped calling.
She had always said:
Daddy is busy.
Daddy will come back.
Then Claire reached the next page.
Vanessa takes my phone sometimes.
She says Daddy doesn't need to know everything.
Claire stood abruptly.
Her heart raced.
That wasn't all.
Emily had written about a secret.
Vanessa had told her never to tell Mommy.
Claire read the final paragraph.
Mommy, if Daddy comes home, tell him.
I didn't want him to go.
And underneath it:
Daddy doesn't know what she did.
Claire stared at the sentence.
Then the phone rang.
Michael.
“Claire.”
“Yes?”
“We found something.”
“What?”
“The trust.”
Claire's stomach tightened.
“What about it?”
“It was changed.”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
Claire remembered that period.
Emily had begun getting sick around then.
Michael continued.
“Someone altered the guardian clause.”
Claire sat down.
“Who?”
“Vanessa.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“What does that mean?”
“If something happened to you, Vanessa would control Emily's inheritance.”
“How much?”
“Seven million dollars.”
Claire felt sick.
Emily's grandfather had left her a substantial inheritance.
The money had always been protected.
Claire had never cared about it.
She had wanted Emily to grow up.
But someone else had cared.
A lot.
Michael sent the document.
Claire opened it.
Her signature was there.
Except she had never signed it.
“It’s forged.”
“Yes.”
“What about Daniel?”
“His signature is there too.”
Claire stared.
“Did he sign it?”
“We're checking.”
Then Michael sent another file.
Bank statements.
Daniel had received payments.
Monthly.
Small at first.
Then larger.
Claire read the numbers.
Two thousand.
Five thousand.
Twenty thousand.
One hundred thousand.
Her face hardened.
“Where did the money come from?”
“Vanessa.”
Claire's breath caught.
“What was it for?”
Michael paused.
“We believe she paid Daniel to stay away.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Vanessa hadn't simply manipulated Daniel.
She had financed his absence.
She had told him Claire was unstable.
She had told him Emily was safe.
And while Daniel remained away, Vanessa positioned herself closer to Emily's inheritance.
But there was still one question.
Why had Emily become so sick?
Michael had the answer.
“Her medical records were altered.”
Claire stood.
“By who?”
“We don't know yet.”
“Find out.”
“We will.”
Claire looked at the photograph.
Her daughter had known something was wrong.
She had tried to tell them.
But nobody had listened soon enough.
Michael called again.
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“We found a message from Vanessa.”
“Send it.”
The message appeared on Claire's screen.
Once Claire is removed, Emily's trust becomes accessible.
Claire stared.
The words were unmistakable.
This wasn't an accident.
It wasn't confusion.
It wasn't family drama.
It was a plan.
Claire's grief turned into rage.
She walked toward Emily's bedroom.
She opened the door.
The room still smelled like her daughter.
She touched the pillow.
Then she opened the closet.
Everything remained.
Pink dresses.
Shoes.
School bags.
A small plastic crown.
Claire sat on the floor.
She cried.
But this time, the tears were different.
“I hear you now.”
Her phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Stop digging.
Claire stared at the message.
Another appeared.
You already lost your daughter.
Don't lose everything else.
Claire took screenshots.
Then she called Michael.
“I got a threat.”
“Send it to me.”
She did.
Michael said:
“Don't respond.”
“I won't.”
“Claire, this means they know we're investigating.”
“Good.”
“What?”
May you like
Claire looked at Emily's photograph.
“Now they know I'm not stopping.”
