Chapter 5 - THE NURSE WHO REMEMBEREDSarah had worked at the hospital for twelve years.
She had cared for Emily during her final weeks.
She had been afraid to speak.
But after seeing the investigation, she decided she couldn't remain silent.
She brought Claire a notebook.
Inside were detailed notes.
Every medication.
Every symptom.
Every conversation.
And one sentence repeated again and again:
Emily asked if Daddy was coming.
Claire read the first entry.
“Daddy today?”
The next.
“Did Daddy call?”
Then:
“Is Daddy mad at me?”
Claire couldn't breathe.
Emily had believed she was responsible.
Sarah explained:
“She thought her father stayed away because she was sick.”
Claire cried.
“I never told her that.”
“Vanessa did.”
Sarah turned another page.
“Emily said Vanessa told her Daddy didn't want to see her.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The next page contained something even worse.
Emily had asked Sarah:
“Can you tell Mommy?”
Sarah had written:
She is afraid Vanessa will hear.
Claire stared.
“What did she want you to tell me?”
Sarah answered:
“She said Vanessa was taking her phone.”
Claire's heart broke.
Emily had been trying to reach her.
Someone had been stopping her.
Sarah testified.
The courtroom became silent.
She described Emily's final night.
“She asked for her mother.”
Claire cried.
“What else?”
“She asked me to hold her hand.”
Sarah swallowed.
“She said she was tired.”
Claire asked:
“Did she suffer?”
“Not at the very end.”
That answer brought Claire a strange kind of relief.
Emily had not been alone.
Someone had held her hand.
The prosecution then presented the original medical records.
The defense couldn't explain the alterations.
The doctor admitted changing them.
Vanessa's lawyer claimed she hadn't ordered him to.
Then the security footage appeared.
Vanessa entering the medical records office.
The courtroom watched.
Eleven minutes.
She emerged.
The records were altered.
No explanation could undo it.
The prosecution then presented the trust.
The signature examiner confirmed Claire's signature was forged.
Daniel's signature was also forged.
Vanessa had created the amendment herself.
Her goal was control.
The seven million dollars.
The courtroom went silent.
Claire looked at Emily's photograph.
