Chapter 3 - VANESSA’S RECORDINGVanessa called Eleanor the next morning.
Eleanor nearly declined.
Then answered with Lydia listening.
“I didn’t know about the conservatorship.”
“I believe that.”
Vanessa sounded surprised.
“You do?”
“Yes.”
“I also don’t care.”
Silence.
Vanessa had still cut her hair.
Still threatened her.
Still tried to force her signature.
Being deceived by Michael did not make Vanessa innocent.
Good.
Vanessa seemed to understand.
“I have something.”
“What?”
“A recording.”
Eleanor almost laughed.
“Apparently everyone records everyone in this family.”
Vanessa did not.
Six weeks earlier, she had secretly recorded Michael speaking to a financial adviser.
Why?
She suspected he was hiding debt from her.
On the recording, Michael said:
“If Mom signs voluntarily, great. If she doesn’t, we establish incapacity.”
The adviser asked whether Vanessa would cooperate.
Michael answered:
“She will if she thinks losing the house means losing our lifestyle.”
Vanessa stopped the recording there.
Eleanor felt no satisfaction.
Just clarity.
Michael had manipulated both women differently.
With Eleanor: family duty.
With Vanessa: fear of financial loss.
He knew the weaknesses available to him and selected accordingly.
Vanessa asked:
“Does this help me?”
Eleanor answered honestly.
“Legally? Probably.”
“And with you?”
“No.”
Vanessa went quiet.

Eleanor was learning that boundaries did not need to sound angry to be real.
