One showed Grace being forced to remain outside after refusing food.
Another showed Sabrina mocking her while she cried.
Another captured Diane threatening to cancel Grace's birthday if she told Laura.
Several contained no obvious mistreatment.
That made them more credible, Daniel explained.
Connor wasn't recording only dramatic incidents.
He was documenting what happened.
The most disturbing clip showed Diane coaching Grace.
“Who makes Mommy angry?”
Grace whispered:
“Me.”
Laura had to stop watching.
That sentence explained changes she'd noticed.
Grace had become apologetic.
Spilled milk?
“Sorry, Mommy.”
Dropped toy?
“Sorry.”
Couldn't sleep?
“Sorry.”
Laura thought she was entering a sensitive phase.
No.
Someone was teaching her she caused adult anger.
Laura changed immediately.
Whenever Grace apologized unnecessarily, Laura asked:
“Did you do something wrong?”
Usually Grace thought.
Then:
“No.”
“Then you don't owe an apology.”
Slowly, the automatic “sorry” faded.
Connor's experience also surfaced.
Diane hadn't targeted him in the same way.
She used him differently.
He was older.
She treated him like a co-conspirator.
“Girls are dramatic.”
“Grace needs discipline.”
“Don't tell your father everything.”
Connor initially believed her.
Then he saw Grace crying alone outside.
Something changed.
He started recording.
Michael was devastated.
“I left him with her.”
Laura understood the guilt.
“I left Grace too.”
Neither parent could change that.
They could change what happened next.
Michael prohibited unsupervised contact between Connor and Diane.
Diane called him ungrateful.
Then threatened inheritance.
Michael laughed.
“Keep it.”

That enraged her more than anything.
Money only controlled people who accepted the bargain.
