Chapter 6 - DANIEL'S VERSIONDaniel eventually asked Rachel for a private conversation.

She refused private.

Attorneys attended.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I never wanted Noah hurt.”

Rachel stared.

“You told Vanessa not to leave marks.”

His face changed.

“She was strict.”

“You knew.”

“I didn't know she was hitting him.”

“You knew enough to hide it.”

Daniel looked down.

Then came the sentence Rachel would remember forever.

“I was trying to keep the family together.”

Rachel almost laughed.

Instead:

“Which family?”

Daniel looked up.

She continued.

“The one where your son was afraid to cry?”

Silence.

“The one where your wife searched his clothes?”

Nothing.

“Or the one where you were preparing to take his mother away because you needed control of his money?”

Daniel's face hardened.

“That trust belongs to my family.”

Rachel understood.

There.

Finally.

Noah wasn't simply his son.

He was the container holding Daniel's inheritance.

Daniel believed bloodline created entitlement.

Margaret had discovered that belief.

And prepared for it.
