Chapter 3 - THE THINGS NOAH TRIED TO SAYRachel began remembering.

Noah refusing to go to Daniel's house.
Noah suddenly wetting the bed.
Noah asking whether “bad boys” still got mothers.
Once he had said:
“Vanessa doesn't like crying.”
Rachel asked:
“Does she yell?”
Noah nodded.
Rachel told Daniel.
Daniel replied:
We're working on boundaries. Don't undermine us.
Rachel accepted it.
Why?
Because co-parenting advice constantly warned against interrogating children after transitions.
Rachel didn't want to become the suspicious ex-wife.
She overcorrected.
That realization hurt.
Her badge had trained her to notice patterns in strangers.
With her own child, she had feared seeing too much.
Now she wondered whether she'd seen too little.
A child specialist stopped Rachel from repeatedly questioning Noah.
“You're his mother right now.”
Rachel understood.
Not investigator.
Mother.
So professionals conducted interviews.
Noah disclosed punishments.
Isolation.
Food withheld for minor disobedience.
Vanessa squeezing his arm.
Threatening to send Rachel away if he complained.
The ballroom slap wasn't the beginning.
It was simply the first time Vanessa did it where Rachel could see.
Daniel denied knowing the extent.
Then investigators recovered messages.
Vanessa:
He cried for Rachel again.
Daniel:
Then make him understand that doesn't work here.
Another:
You're too soft afterward.
Another:
Whatever you do, don't leave marks before exchanges.
Rachel read that sentence three times.
Daniel knew.
Maybe not every act.
May you like
But enough.
More than enough.
