Chapter 8 - HEALING WAS NOT FORGETTINGMarriage did not erase Elena’s fear.

One night Rafael arrived two hours late.

Traffic accident.

Dead phone.

When he entered, Elena stood shaking in the kitchen.

“What happened?”

“Traffic.”

“Your phone?”

“Dead.”

“I called twelve times.”

Then he understood.

Four years earlier.

Silence.

Disappearance.

No answers.

“Elena.”

“Don't.”

“I should have found a phone.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

She cried.

He did not tell her she was overreacting.

Did not say the past was over.

He simply stayed.

Healing was not forgetting.

It was learning what to do when memory returned.

Rafael had his own ghosts.

Sometimes he watched Camila sleeping.

Three missing years.

First steps.

First words.

Birthdays.

He once whispered:

“I will never forgive myself.”

Elena answered:

“You have to.”

“Why?”

“Because Camila doesn't need a father who spends her childhood mourning the childhood he missed.”

That changed him.

He stopped trying to repay the past.

Started living in the present.

School plays.

Lost teeth.

Bicycle crashes.

Purple clothing phases.

Three months of piano.

A stray kitten.

Rafael was allergic.

“You cannot keep it.”

Camila stared.

“Why?”

“I cannot breathe.”

“You breathing now.”

Elena laughed so hard she had to leave.

They kept the cat.

Rafael took medication.

Ordinary life won again.

Then, when Camila was thirteen, she learned about Sofia.

“Did she really try to kick me out?”

Elena nearly dropped a plate.

“Who told you?”

“Uncle Andrés.”

Rafael groaned.

“I’m killing him.”

Camila grinned.

“Was Sofia evil?”

Elena paused.

“No.”

Even Rafael looked surprised.

“She made a cruel choice.”

“Same thing?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because people are more complicated than the worst thing they do.”

Camila looked at Rafael.

“Dad made bad choices?”

“Yes.”

Rafael sighed.

“Apparently honesty day.”

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“You?”

Elena smiled.

“A lot.”

“Grandpa?”

“Definitely.”

They laughed.

That became their family story.

Not heroes.

Not villains.

Choices.

Some terrible.

Some fearful.

Some proud.

May you like

Some loving but badly expressed.

And everyone had to own theirs.
