Chapter 7 - THE QUESTION CAMILA FINALLY ASKEDWhen Camila was seven, she asked why Rafael had not lived with them when she was a baby.

They were driving.

No warning.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Why Dad not live with us before?”

Elena gripped the steering wheel.

Rafael sat beside her.

Their eyes met.

Truth.

Age appropriate.

No villains.

Rafael answered.

“Because I didn't know where you were.”

“Why?”

“People made mistakes.”

“Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Grandpa?”

Rafael sighed.

“Also yes.”

“Big mistake?”

Elena looked at her through the mirror.

“Yes.”

“Dad say sorry?”

“A lot,” Rafael said.

Camila nodded.

“Okay.”

Then returned to her tablet.

Adults complicated guilt.

Children wanted enough truth to feel safe.

As Camila grew, they told her more.

Never lies.

Never pretending Rafael had been blameless.

Never pretending Elena had made every perfect choice.

Never pretending Arturo’s actions were harmless.

When Camila was eight, Rafael proposed.

Kitchen.

Strawberries on the cutting board.

Elena noticed the ring in his pocket.

“No.”

Rafael stared.

“I haven't asked.”

“You have a ring.”

“Can I ask?”

“Fine.”

He took it out.

“I can't give you the missing years back.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“I can't pretend being Camila’s father means you owe me a marriage.”

“Good.”

He smiled.

“And loving you now doesn't erase what happened then.”

She swallowed.

“But I want the ordinary parts.”

“What ordinary parts?”

“School pickups.”

“Grocery lists.”

“Fighting about toothpaste.”

“Your six coffee cups.”

“I use one.”

“You use six.”

She laughed.

“I want to grow old enough that Camila thinks we're embarrassing.”

“She already thinks you're embarrassing.”

“Then we're ahead.”

He held out the ring.

“I want a life with you.”

Elena looked at him.

Years earlier, she would have said yes because she loved him.

Now love was not enough.

She asked herself:

Do I trust him?

Yes.

Not perfectly.

But genuinely.

“Okay.”

Rafael blinked.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

His breath exploded from him.

She laughed.

“You were terrified.”

“Completely.”

“Good.”

Their wedding was small.

A garden outside San Miguel de Allende.

Forty guests.

Mrs. Salgado front row.

Arturo quiet.

Sofia absent.

Camila carried the rings.

At dinner, she placed something beside Rafael’s plate.

A gold button.

He stared.

“What is this?”

“Pretty.”

Elena understood immediately.

So did Rafael.

“You remember?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Sal told me.”

Across the table, Mrs. Salgado suddenly became fascinated with dinner.

Everyone laughed.

A tiny gold button.

Years earlier, another one had rolled across a marble floor.

It had not caused anything.

It had merely arrived at the moment adults could no longer hide.

Rafael learned he had a daughter.

Elena learned his silence was more complicated than abandonment.

Sofia learned she could not control the future by controlling a house.

Arturo learned that controlling information did not control consequences.

May you like

And Camila?

She had simply found something shiny.
