Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS ABOUT TO BECOME HIS WIFEBy noon, Sofia’s luggage filled the foyer.

Three suitcases.

Two garment bags.

One enormous designer trunk.

Elena stayed behind the service door with Camila.

She did not want to watch.

She heard anyway.

“I suppose you're pleased with yourself,” Sofia said.

Rafael answered:

“This isn't about Elena.”

“Everything is about Elena now.”

“No.”

“You have a child with your maid.”

“She wasn't my employee when we were together.”

Camila ate apple slices beside Elena.

She seemed blissfully unaware that several adult lives were collapsing twenty feet away.

Sofia’s voice sharpened.

“You knew her before me.”

“Yes.”

“You loved her?”

Silence.

Elena stopped breathing.

Rafael answered carefully.

“That was years ago.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

“Sofia.”

“Do you still love her?”

Long silence.

Then:

“I don't know what I feel.”

Sofia laughed.

“That is worse.”

Elena closed her eyes.

She did not want this.

Not Sofia’s pain.

Not Rafael’s confusion.

Not old love dragged into the open before either of them had processed the existence of their daughter.

Sofia asked:

“Are you ending our engagement?”

“I’m postponing the wedding.”

“Postponing?”

“I discovered this morning that I have a three-year-old daughter.”

“You don't know that.”

“I know Elena.”

“You knew Elena.”

Rafael said nothing.

Sofia continued:

“Get a DNA test.”

“I will.”

“And if the child is yours?”

“Then I become her father.”

“You are already talking as though Elena gets to decide everything.”

“She has raised Camila alone.”

“That doesn't give her ownership.”

“No.”

Rafael’s voice cooled.

“But neither does my money.”

Elena looked toward the door.

That answer surprised her.

Sofia became quiet.

Then:

“You're judging me because of what I said this morning.”

“Yes.”

“I was angry.”

“You threatened a three-year-old.”

“I wanted boundaries.”

“You called her a problem.”

“She was interfering with my home.”

“She is a child.”

Sofia’s voice cracked.

“And now apparently she is your child.”

No one spoke.

When Sofia finally left, Elena heard the front doors close.

Then a car.

Rafael did not come to the service wing immediately.

Good.

Two hours passed.

Camila was drawing when he appeared.

He stopped at the doorway.

“Can I come in?”

Elena nodded.

Camila looked up.

“Button Man.”

Rafael smiled.

“I guess that's my name.”

He sat on the floor rather than taking a chair.

“What are you drawing?”

“House.”

Three figures stood beside it.

Camila.

Elena.

Mrs. Salgado.

No Rafael.

Of course.

He swallowed.

“Can I ask you some questions?”

Camila nodded.

“Favorite color?”

“Purple.”

“Favorite food?”

“Noodles.”

“Dogs?”

“No.”

Rafael blinked.

“No?”

“Dog lick.”

He laughed.

“Fair.”

Ten minutes became an awkward interview until Elena interrupted.

“Stop talking to her like she's applying for a job.”

Rafael looked embarrassed.

“I don't know how to do this.”

For once, Elena had no cruel answer.

Of course he didn't.

He had never been a father.

And no amount of money could purchase three years of experience overnight.

When his time ended, Rafael stood.

“Thank you.”

Camila looked up.

“You come tomorrow?”

His eyes filled instantly.

He looked at Elena.

“If Mommy says yes.”

Camila turned.

“Mommy?”

Elena hesitated.

“We'll see.”

That night Elena found a note beneath her door.

A phone number.

Underneath, Rafael had written:

This one will not change.

She stared at it.

Then placed it inside a drawer.

Three days later came the DNA test.

Elena chose the laboratory.

Her attorney attended.

Rafael came alone.

The technician swabbed Camila’s cheek.

She giggled.

Then watched Rafael’s sample.

“Big man tiny stick.”

Even Elena laughed.

Four days later, the report arrived.

99.9998 percent probability.

Rafael Mendoza was Camila’s biological father.

He read the page three times.

His hands shook.

Camila sat nearby building a crooked tower.

Finally Rafael asked:

“Can I hug her?”

Elena looked at him.

“Ask her.”

That surprised him.

Then he crouched.

“Camila?”

She looked up.

“Can I have a hug?”

Camila checked Elena’s face.

Elena nodded.

The little girl stood.

Walked toward Rafael.

Wrapped her arms around his neck.

Rafael closed his eyes.

Tears ran silently down his face.

Camila pulled back.

“You sad.”

He laughed.

“Happy sad.”

She frowned.

“Weird.”

“Yes.”

Elena looked away before her own eyes betrayed her.

The legal arrangements began immediately.

Formal child support.

Medical insurance.

Education protections.

Inheritance rights.

Primary physical custody with Elena.

Gradual visitation.

No press.

No photographs online.

No suddenly moving Camila into Rafael’s mansion.

Rafael agreed.

Elena’s attorney looked suspicious.

“You understand Ms. Torres is requesting gradual parenting time?”

“Yes.”

“You are not seeking immediate shared physical custody?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Rafael looked toward Camila.

“Because I missed three years.”

Then toward Elena.

“I don't get to discover I’m her father on Thursday and expect her to treat me like Dad on Friday.”

Something inside Elena shifted.

Barely.

Not forgiveness.

Not trust.

Just the smallest crack in a wall.

But while Rafael was learning how to enter Camila’s life carefully, another investigation had begun.

He wanted to know what happened to Elena’s messages.

His father had agreed to meet.

And when Rafael placed the first recovered routing memo on Arturo Mendoza’s desk, the old man did not look confused.

He looked angry.

May you like

Which told Rafael something immediately.

His father knew exactly what he was looking at.
