Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF TRYING TOO HARDRafael tried to compensate for three missing years with money.

It failed almost immediately.

First came a bedroom at the mansion.

Purple walls.

Custom furniture.

Shelves filled with toys.

Elena stood in the doorway.

“No.”

Rafael blinked.

“What?”

“She isn't moving here.”

“I know.”

“Then why does she need this?”

“For visits.”

“She visits three hours at a time.”

“She may want to nap.”

“She has never once voluntarily napped in her life.”

Rafael looked at the miniature canopy bed.

“I may have overdone it.”

“Yes.”

Next came private preschool.

“No.”

A driver.

“No.”

A wardrobe.

“Absolutely not.”

A trust fund.

Elena stared at the paperwork.

“How much?”

Rafael told her.

She nearly dropped it.

“She cannot touch this until she's older.”

“Obviously.”

“And she does not grow up believing money solves every problem.”

Rafael looked at her.

“That aimed at me?”

“Partly.”

He nodded.

Fair.

Then came the car.

Elena’s old sedan broke down twice.

One morning she found a brand-new SUV outside.

A bow on the hood.

She marched into Rafael’s office.

“Send it back.”

He looked confused.

“Your car isn't safe.”

“So you bought me another one?”

“Our daughter rides in it.”

“You didn't ask me.”

“Elena—”

“No.”

He stood.

“This is about safety.”

“This is about control.”

“I am not controlling you.”

“You made a decision about my life without asking.”

Rafael stopped.

That sentence.

His father had done exactly that.

Years earlier.

Different scale.

Same arrogance.

He looked at the keys.

Then picked up the phone.

“I’ll return it.”

Elena blinked.

“That's it?”

“You're right.”

She had prepared an entire argument.

Now she almost felt cheated.

Rafael smiled.

“Can I offer a compromise?”

“What?”

“You choose a car.”

She waited.

“I pay half because Camila uses it.”

“Half.”

“Half.”

“No armored tank.”

“I wasn't—”

“Rafael.”

“Fine.”

Trust grew that way.

Not through grand declarations.

Through corrections.

He learned.

Elena watched.

And Camila, completely uninterested in adult emotional complexity, gradually fell in love with her father.

At first:

Button Man.

Then Rafael.

Then one afternoon at an ice cream shop, she dropped chocolate onto his shoe.

“Camila.”

She looked up.

“Yes, Dad?”

Rafael froze.

Camila kept eating.

He said nothing until she was gone.

Then sat inside his parked car for twenty minutes.

When he finally told Elena, she laughed.

“You're ridiculously emotional.”

“You enjoy watching me suffer.”

“A little.”

Months passed.

Sofia officially ended the engagement with Rafael.

Not because Elena demanded it.

She never did.

Sofia later asked Elena to meet.

Hotel café.

Neutral ground.

Sofia looked different without the ring.

Tired.

Human.

“I owe you an apology.”

Elena waited.

“I was horrible to Camila.”

“Yes.”

Sofia almost smiled.

“I rehearsed this conversation. You were more forgiving in rehearsal.”

“I’m not required to make your apology comfortable.”

“No.”

Sofia looked down.

“I hated what I couldn't control.”

Elena frowned.

“Camila?”

“The house.”

“The staff.”

“Rafael’s life.”

“Everything existed before me.”

Sofia wrapped her hands around her coffee.

“And your daughter felt like another reminder that I wasn't actually in control.”

“She was three.”

“I know.”

“That's not an excuse.”

“I know.”

Then Sofia admitted something.

She had noticed Rafael behaved strangely around Elena before the confrontation.

Not affection exactly.

Awareness.

He avoided looking at Elena too deliberately.

And Camila had always seemed familiar.

“Why didn't you ask?”

Sofia laughed sadly.

“Because I didn't want the answer.”

Before leaving she said:

“I hope Camila is okay.”

“She is.”

“And you?”

Elena thought.

“Still figuring it out.”

“So am I.”

They never met again.

That night Rafael came to Elena’s apartment to return Camila.

The little girl was asleep in his arms.

He carried her inside.

Placed her gently on the bed.

Then stood in the hallway.

“Elena.”

“Yes?”

“Dinner.”

She frowned.

“With Camila?”

“No.”

She stared.

“Why?”

Rafael looked more nervous than she had ever seen him.

“Because I want to take you to dinner.”

“No.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

That was all.

Elena watched him leave.

Two months later, she was the one who called.

“Dinner?”

Silence.

Then Rafael:

“About Camila?”

“No.”

His laugh came through the phone.

May you like

And for the first time, Elena realized something more frightening than discovering she still loved him.

She might eventually trust him again.
