Chapter 9 - EVAN'S QUESTIONAt twelve, Evan asked:

“Why didn't Daniel want me?”

Emily's heart broke.

She knew the question would come eventually.

“He wanted parts of being your father.”

“That sounds fake.”

“Maybe.”

“Did he love me?”

Emily thought carefully.

“I think he cared about you.”

“That's not love.”

Children become philosophers when adults disappoint them.

Emily smiled sadly.

“What do you think love is?”

Evan shrugged.

“Not making someone eat garbage.”

Fair.

Emily laughed despite tears.

“No.”

Then:

“I think Daniel wanted family to fit a picture in his head.”

“Me, Vanessa, Noah?”

“Yes.”

“And I messed up the picture.”

“You existed before the picture.”

Evan smiled.

That mattered.

He wasn't an obstacle.

He was already there.

Daniel and Evan never rebuilt a father-son relationship.

Too much had happened.

But years later, Daniel wrote him a letter.

No demands.

No request to be called Dad.

He admitted:

“I treated you as though belonging was something I could grant or remove.”

Evan kept the letter.

May you like

He didn't reply.

That was his right.
