Chapter 8 - NOAH'S BIRTHDAYA year later, Noah turned two.

Emily feared birthdays.

Cake especially.

Ridiculous.

But trauma attaches itself to ordinary objects.

She considered skipping the party.

Evan said:

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Why?”

“Noah needs cake.”

Simple.

They invited eight people.

Not fifty.

No Margaret.

No Vanessa.

Daniel attended for one hour under agreed conditions.

Evan helped put candles on the cake.

Then stared at the trash can.

Emily noticed.

He walked over.

Closed the lid.

Returned.

That was all.

When cake was served, Emily gave Evan a slice first.

He frowned.

“It's Noah's birthday.”

“I know.”

“Shouldn't he get first?”

“He's two. He doesn't know.”

Evan laughed.

Then ate.

Slowly at first.

Then normally.

Daniel watched from across the room.

His eyes filled.

Afterward he approached Emily.

“I didn't understand what we were doing to him.”

Emily stared.

“Yes, you did.”

Daniel stopped.

“You may not have understood the damage.”

She continued.

“But you understood he was hungry.”

Daniel looked down.

That distinction mattered.

People often used ignorance to avoid responsibility for obvious choices.

Emily refused.

Daniel whispered:

“I know.”

Progress began there.

May you like

Not forgiveness.

Accuracy.
