Chapter 6 - MARGARET'S LAST DINNERMargaret requested her belongings.

Emily allowed supervised collection.

Margaret entered the kitchen and stopped.

The birthday decorations were gone.

Trash can replaced.

Table cleaned.

She looked smaller without guests around her.

“You embarrassed me.”

Emily almost laughed.

“Still?”

“You shoved cake in my mouth.”

“Yes.”

“That was assault.”

Emily nodded.

“I should not have done that.”

Margaret looked surprised.

Emily continued:

“I was furious. I lost control.”

Margaret waited for justification.

Emily didn't give it.

“Your turn.”

“What?”

“Say what you did.”

Margaret stiffened.

“I disciplined him.”

“No.”

“He stole.”

“He was hungry.”

“He manipulates.”

“He was five.”

Margaret looked away.

Emily stepped closer.

“You called my son trash.”

Silence.

“You gave Noah cake while Evan searched garbage.”

Margaret's eyes flickered.

“You held my baby while humiliating my other child.”

Margaret finally whispered:

“He isn't Daniel's.”

Emily stared.

“There.”

Margaret looked up.

“The truth.”

Margaret's face hardened.

“Blood matters.”

Emily answered:

“Then you had no business claiming to be his grandmother.”

That landed.

Margaret said nothing else.

She collected her belongings and left.

Her access to both children remained restricted pending professional review.

Years later, that sentence would still define Emily's boundary.

If blood mattered enough to exclude Evan, then family titles could not be used only when convenient.
