Chapter 3 - VANESSA'S ROOMVanessa had been living in Emily's house.

Not officially.

But enough.

Clothes in Daniel's closet.

Cosmetics in the guest bathroom.

Red heels beneath the bed.

Emily discovered them the next morning.

She didn't scream.

She photographed everything.

Sarah approved.

“Good.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“Apparently adultery made me organized.”

The affair had lasted at least nine months.

Messages confirmed it.

Daniel and Vanessa discussed Emily's travel schedule.

Noah.

Evan.

The house.

Then Emily found one message.

Vanessa:

Once Evan is placed, things will finally feel like our family.

Daniel replied:

Mom agrees.

Emily sat down.

Our family.

Evan was being removed not merely for money.

He was an obstacle to a replacement family.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Noah.

Margaret.

Clean.

Biological.

Convenient.

Evan represented Emily's life before Daniel.

Her late fiancé.

Her father's trust.

A child Daniel never fully accepted.

Emily remembered little things.

Daniel refusing to include Evan's surname on Christmas cards.

Margaret calling him “Emily's boy.”

Vanessa once asking:

“Does he see Daniel as Dad?”

Emily had thought it innocent.

No.

They had been measuring belonging.

Then Emily found another message.

Daniel:

She'll fight if she thinks I'm rejecting Evan.

Vanessa:

Then make him impossible first.

Emily stopped breathing.

There it was.

Make him impossible.

Not:

Help him.

Not:

Love him.

Create behavior.

Create conflict.

Create exhaustion.

Then convince Emily the child needed placement.

But Emily had gone away before the plan matured.

Without her there, cruelty accelerated.

They became careless.

And she returned early.

Again.

Timing.

One day changed everything.
