Chapter 4 - The Counter-Offensive

I didn't hire a flashy divorce lawyer. I hired Sarah Jenkins, a former JAG officer turned civilian bulldog.
While Eleanor continued her media tour, Sarah and I sat in a secure conference room with two forensic accountants and an FBI financial crimes agent.
"The offshore accounts are nested deep," the FBI agent explained, pointing to a sprawling whiteboard filled with flowcharts. "But Chloe's photographs gave us the exact routing numbers we needed. The Sterling family has laundered over forty million dollars in the last three years. But we need hard evidence. A hard drive. A physical ledger."
"Julian keeps a master flash drive in a biometric safe in his home office," Chloe said, sitting beside me, her voice growing stronger every day. "He bragged about it once. He said it was his 'insurance policy' against his brother."

"We can't get a warrant for the safe without more probable cause," the agent sighed. "And if they know we're looking, they'll destroy it."
"They won't know," I said, my eyes narrowing. "Because we are going to create a diversion so massive, they won't even realize their fortress is burning."
