Chapter 2 - The Fortress

I didn't take Chloe back to her marital mansion, and I didn't take her to a civilian hotel. I drove her straight through the gates of Camp Pendleton.
As a Colonel, I had access to secure base housing. The Sterling family could bribe hotel clerks and local cops, but they couldn't penetrate a heavily guarded United States Marine Corps base.
For the first three days, Chloe slept. Her body was recovering from severe physical and psychological trauma. I sat by her bed, reviewing my deployment strategies, applying the same tactical precision to my daughter's divorce that I used in active combat zones.
On the fourth night, Chloe finally walked into the small kitchen, wrapping a military fleece around her frail shoulders. She sat at the table, her hands wrapping around a mug of tea.
"Mom," she whispered, her voice trembling. "It wasn't just the abuse. Julian... he caught me looking at his laptop. That's why he locked me in the pool house."
I set my pen down. "What did you see, Chloe?"
She took a shaky breath. "Sterling Real Estate. It’s a front, Mom. Julian and Preston are moving millions of dollars through shell companies. They are buying up properties, inflating the values, and laundering money for an offshore syndicate. When Julian realized I saw the ledger, he panicked. He said if I ever breathed a word, he would have you discharged and ruined."

A cold, lethal calm washed over me. This wasn't just domestic violence anymore. It was a massive federal crime.
"They picked the wrong military family to threaten," I said, pulling out my encrypted laptop. "We aren't just going to divorce him, Chloe. We are going to dismantle them."
