Public place.
Attorney nearby.
She placed the engagement ring on the table.
“You knew my father.”
“Yes.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You owed Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“Did you propose because of my inheritance?”
Ethan looked exhausted.
“No.”
Natalie almost believed him.
Then:
“Not at first.”
There it was.
He claimed he genuinely fell in love.
Perhaps he had.
That somehow made things worse.
Because at some point love and opportunity existed simultaneously.
And when forced to choose—
he chose opportunity.
“How much of this ring did Chloe pay for?”
Ethan looked down.
“Eight thousand.”
Natalie laughed once.
Her sister had indirectly financed the engagement ring used to convince Natalie to marry the man who owed her sister money.
Almost impressive.
She pushed it toward him.
“Sell it.”
“Natalie—”
“Pay Chloe.”
“What about us?”
“There is no us.”
He cried.
