Chapter 2 - THE LETTER FROM A DEAD MANNatalie left her own engagement party.

Not dramatically.
No overturned tables.
No speech.
She simply removed Ethan's hand when he tried to follow her.
“Don't.”
“Natalie, you're upset.”
“My mother told me my daughter should die.”
“She didn't mean it.”
Natalie stopped.
“Which part?”
Ethan had no answer.
“Go help her.”
She left.
At home, she sat beside Emma's empty bed and reopened Daniel's letter.
Her father had written it during the final months of his life.
Daniel Bennett had been an accountant.
Methodical.
Quiet.
The opposite of Vivian.
The letter contained instructions.
Not accusations.
Daniel explained that he'd discovered irregular withdrawals from an investment account.
Small initially.
Then larger.
He suspected someone had gained access through Vivian.
Instead of confronting her immediately, he moved most of his assets.
Then he created the $60,000 inheritance.
Natalie frowned every time she reached that part.
The sixty thousand is intentionally visible.
Visible?
Why?
The next sentence explained:
Some people reveal themselves only when they believe money is within reach.
Then:
Chloe has already received more help from me than she will ever admit. Do not sacrifice Emma's future to rescue her again.
Natalie had initially assumed Daniel meant Chloe's reckless spending.
Now she wasn't sure.
At the bottom:
If Ethan Mercer is ever involved in discussions about this money, contact Martin Hale.
Ethan Mercer.
Her fiancé.
A man Daniel had supposedly never met.
Natalie stared at the name until sunrise.
Then she called Martin Hale.
Her father's attorney.

Martin answered:
“I've been waiting for this call.”
