Chapter 9: Unlocking the Past

The heavy iron key slid into the ancient brass keyhole of the eastern wing double doors with a satisfying, mechanical click. Julian turned the handle, and the massive wooden panels swung inward, releasing a faint smell of aged paper, polished mahogany, and dust that had settled undisturbed for decades. Clara stood just behind him, holding a high-powered electric lantern that cut through the absolute darkness of the forbidden wing.

As the beam of light swept across the room, it revealed a vast, wood-paneled library filled with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, antique globes, and a large mahogany desk positioned beneath a high arched skylight. This was not a corporate storage room; it was a private sanctuary of historical records, personal journals, and legal documents that predated the modern Vance empire.

"My grandfather built this wing," Julian murmured, stepping inside and letting his hand brush against the spines of the leather-bound ledgers. "He always said that a family's true wealth isn't measured in capital, but in character and truth."

"Mrs. Vance mentioned that the eastern wing holds the original deeds and charitable trusts," Clara said, her voice barely above a whisper as she walked cautiously behind him. "If Beatrice was so desperate to get to them, there must be something here that invalidates her claims—or worse, exposes how she managed to integrate herself into the family."

Julian stopped in front of a large, fireproof iron safe built directly into the stone wall behind the desk. He pulled the leather key pouch from his pocket, selecting a smaller, intricately carved brass key. Margaret had given it to him just before he came down, whispering only one instruction: *Look for the blue ledger.*

Julian inserted the key and spun the heavy combination dial, entering the sequence his mother had provided. With a deep, resonating thud, the heavy steel door swung open.

Inside sat neatly stacked folders tied with faded red ribbons, a collection of vintage photographs, and a thick, leather-bound volume with a faded blue spine. Julian reached inside and pulled out the blue ledger. The pages were yellowed with age, filled with his grandfather’s precise, elegant handwriting.

He opened it to the bookmarked page near the middle. Clara leaned in slightly to read over his shoulder as the beam of light illuminated the ink.

"Read this," Julian whispered, his voice trembling slightly as his eyes scanned the paragraphs.

The entry was dated nearly thirty years ago, detailing the founding of the Vance Charitable Foundation and the strict stipulations governing the estate inheritance. But it was a supplementary addendum added later by Margaret herself that commanded their full attention. It detailed a corporate background check on Beatrice Vance—then Beatrice Sinclair—revealing that her previous financial ruin and familial ties had been systematically fabricated to gain entry into high society, and that she had signed a prenuptial agreement waiving all claims to the core family trusts in the event of financial fraud or bad faith.

"She knew," Julian said, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place with devastating clarity. "My mother knew about Beatrice's past from the very beginning. She allowed the marriage, hoping Beatrice would change, but kept the core trusts protected behind this safe."

"And when Beatrice’s recent speculations threatened her financial standing," Clara added quietly, "she realized she had to either steal the deeds or destroy the family trust before the truth came to light."
