Chapter 5: Whispers in the Hallway

The heavy oak door of the study clicked shut as Beatrice stormed out, her pride wounded beyond repair, though she dared not raise her voice against Julian’s final decree. Julian remained inside the dimly lit room, staring down at the financial statements scattered across the desk. The numbers told a damning story of embezzlement, deception, and escalating desperation. He rubbed his temples, feeling a dull, throbbing headache building behind his eyes. The Vance family had survived economic depressions, societal shifts, and personal tragedies, but internal rot was a far more dangerous enemy.

Outside in the dimly lit hallway, Clara was quietly making her way toward the service quarters to finish her evening duties. The mansion was vast, its corridors draped in deep mahogany wood panels and oil paintings of ancestors who seemed to watch every passing soul with stern, unblinking eyes. As she rounded the corner near the grand staircase, she caught sight of a figure standing by the tall arched windows overlooking the moonlit gardens.

It was Beatrice. She had not gone to her rooms as Julian had ordered. Instead, she stood clutching her phone tightly against her ear, speaking in a harsh, frantic whisper that echoed softly off the marble walls.

"I don't care what it takes," Beatrice hissed into the receiver. "Julian is locking me out. He found the trust transfer records. We need to accelerate the timeline... Yes, tonight. Before he manages to secure the physical deeds from the old woman."

Clara froze, pressing herself flat against the shadowed wall beside a tall pedestal holding a bronze sculpture. Her heart pounded against her ribs, but her mind remained sharp and focused. She knew the stakes. Margaret was vulnerable upstairs, and Julian was currently consumed by the paperwork in the study below. If Beatrice had outside help, the situation was far more perilous than they had initially realized.

Beatrice ended the call abruptly, shoving the phone back into the small evening clutch she carried. She looked around the hallway cautiously, making sure the coast was clear, before hurrying down the corridor toward the west wing where the secondary guest rooms were located.

Clara waited a few moments until the sound of Beatrice’s heels faded away entirely. She stepped out from the shadows, her breath coming in slow, controlled gasps. She needed to act, and she needed to act now. But should she go to Julian immediately, or check on Margaret first?

Opting for caution, Clara quietly ascended the service stairs that led directly to the private family quarters on the upper floor. The silence of the night was heavy, interrupted only by the distant hoot of an owl outside and the faint creak of old floorboards settling under the chill of the evening air.

When Clara reached the door to Margaret’s parlor, she noticed something that made her blood run cold. The heavy door, which she had securely latched earlier, was standing ajar by a few inches. A thin sliver of yellow light spilled out onto the dark carpet.
