Chapter 3: Unsettled Accounts

The heavy oak doors of the private parlor upstairs remained firmly shut, muffling the quiet sounds of the estate outside. Inside the warmly lit room, Clara placed a steaming porcelain cup of tea on the mahogany side table next to Margaret’s wheelchair. The room smelled faintly of aged paper, polished wood, and dried lavender. Margaret leaned back against the plush upholstery of her seat, her pale hands resting quietly in her lap. Her gaze was fixed on the dancing flames in the marble fireplace, though her thoughts were clearly elsewhere.

"Thank you, Clara," Margaret said softly, her voice carrying a fragile warmth that contrasted sharply with the iron resolve she had shown downstairs. "You handled yourself with remarkable courage today. Beatrice is a volatile woman, and she does not take kindly to being thwarted."

Clara stood respectfully near the doorway, her hands folded neatly over the white apron tied around her black dress. "I could not stand by and watch her disrespect you, Mrs. Vance. What she attempted was unacceptable. That cane is yours, and more importantly, your safety and dignity are not negotiable."

Margaret offered a faint, appreciative smile, the corners of her eyes crinkling gently. "Loyalty is a rare commodity in this house, Clara. Most people see only the wealth, the grand staircase, the sparkling chandeliers, and the name on the gates. They do not see the foundations upon which all of this was built—foundations that required great sacrifice to lay."

"Mr. Julian cares deeply for you," Clara noted, choosing her words with care. "He was very troubled by what he saw."

"Julian is a good man," Margaret sighed, taking a slow sip of the tea. "He carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, trying to please everyone, trying to keep the family legacy intact. But he has always been blind to Beatrice’s true nature. She married him for the Vance name, but she stays for the Vance fortune. And lately, she has become desperate."

"Desperate for what?" Clara asked, stepping a little closer.

Margaret looked up, her gaze steady and piercing. "For control. There are documents in the eastern wing safe—papers that detail the true ownership of this estate and the charitable trusts my late husband established decades ago. Beatrice believes those funds can be liquidated to settle her private debts. If she gets her hands on them, she will dismantle everything we have built."

Clara absorbed the gravity of the revelation. The mansion was not just a home; it was a sanctuary of history and responsibility. "What should we do, Mrs. Vance? Mr. Julian is questioning her downstairs right now, but will he be able to stop her?"

Margaret set the teacup down with a quiet clink against the saucer. "Julian will do the right thing, but he needs proof. He needs to see the reality of what Beatrice has been doing behind our backs. And that, Clara, is why we must protect the key at all costs."
