Chapter 6 - THE DINOSAURLeo owned seventeen dinosaurs.

Daniel knew because he stepped on at least three daily.

Emma meant one specific dinosaur.

A green plastic Tyrannosaurus with a removable battery compartment.

Inside was another memory card.

Daniel laughed when Leo proudly showed him.

“Mom said it's a secret treasure.”

Emma had prepared redundancies.

Silver drive.

Tie card.

Dinosaur.

Daniel asked:

“Did Mommy tell you why?”

Leo shook his head.

“She said bad grown-ups might take her bag.”

The sentence chilled him.

Emma had been scared before the memorial.

Truly scared.

She still went.

Why?

Because the board meeting scheduled after the memorial was her best chance to expose the accounts publicly.

If she privately accused Victoria or Adrian, they could isolate her.

In front of directors, evidence would be harder to bury.

They realized that.

So they acted first.

The dinosaur card contained a recorded conversation Emma had captured at the estate four days before the attack.

Victoria and Marcus.

Victoria:

“Daniel will defend us.”

Marcus:

“What if Emma has documents?”

Victoria:

“Then Daniel needs to believe she is unstable.”

Marcus:

“And if he doesn't?”

A pause.

Victoria:

“He always chooses family.”

Daniel stopped playback.

Those four words felt like a verdict.

He always chooses family.

Emma knew it.

Victoria knew it.

Adrian knew it.

Daniel's predictable loyalty had become part of their plan.

They assumed if Emma accused them, Daniel would discredit her himself.

They almost didn't need violence.

His habits could have done the job.

That realization changed him more than the charges.

Daniel resigned from his executive position at Carter Global.

Not from ownership.

From management.

The board begged him to wait.

He refused.

“I need distance from a system where family loyalty substitutes for governance.”

He placed his shares into independent voting management temporarily.

Victoria called it betrayal.

Daniel didn't answer.

Adrian accepted a cooperation agreement.

He admitted financial misconduct.

Cover-up.

Identity fraud involving Daniel's name.

His sentence and financial consequences would come later.

Marcus faced his own charges.

Victoria remained the central figure.

Evidence connected her to the sedative.

The pharmacy purchase.

The glass.

The call to Marcus.

Emma's testimony.

Her attorney maintained that Victoria intended only to calm Emma, not incapacitate her.

Daniel found that defense horrifying.

As though secretly sedating someone became reasonable if you planned a smaller harm.

The criminal proceedings took months.

Emma recovered enough to return home.

Not the Carter estate.

She refused.

Daniel didn't argue.

They rented a house across town.

Smaller.

No guards in the hall.

No portraits.

No family staff except occasional help.

Leo loved it.

“Can we stay here?”

Emma looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered:

“Yes.”

He meant it.

The Carter estate stopped being home the moment Emma fell.

Daniel visited only for legal reasons.

One evening he found Victoria there.

She was permitted limited access to retrieve belongings under supervision.

Daniel entered the library.

She stood beside his grandfather's portrait.

“You've destroyed everything.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Fourteen million dollars disappeared from a charity.”

“Not disappeared.”

“Don't.”

“The family intended to repay—”

“No.”

Victoria stared.

“You sound like her.”

“Good.”

She flinched.

Daniel continued.

“You drugged my wife.”

Victoria's face hardened.

“I gave her something to calm down.”

“She didn't consent.”

“She was hysterical.”

“She was exposing you.”

Victoria looked away.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You put medication in her drink.”

“She wouldn't listen.”

“You pushed her.”

“She grabbed me.”

“She was drugged.”

“She threatened everything your grandfather built.”

Daniel understood.

This was the closest Victoria would come to confession without legal counsel.

“What did Grandfather build?”

“A family.”

“No.”

Daniel looked around.

“He built companies.”

Victoria stared.

“Family was supposed to be the people inside them.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You're choosing Emma over us.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You still think that's the question.”

“It is.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“The question is whether I choose people who hurt my wife and stole from children because we share blood.”

Victoria's eyes filled.

“I am your mother.”

“Yes.”

“You only get one.”

“So does Leo.”

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“He almost lost his.”

Victoria looked down.

That landed.

Daniel left.

Outside, he removed the estate key from his keychain.

He gave it to security.

He didn't need it anymore.

Home was elsewhere.

With Emma.

With Leo.

Whether Emma would remain his wife forever was still uncertain.

Daniel accepted that.

Protection wasn't a transaction.

May you like

He couldn't choose her now and demand marriage as reward.

He had learned at least that much.
