Chapter 2 - THIRTEEN MINUTESThe deleted footage changed everything.

Daniel called Michael privately.

“Who had access?”

“Four people.”

“Names.”

“You. Mrs. Carter. Mr. Adrian Carter. And me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You didn't delete it?”

“No.”

“Can you prove that?”

“Yes. I was on the security network at the hospital when the deletion occurred.”

“My access?”

“Your account wasn't used.”

Daniel already knew what remained.

Victoria.

Adrian.

“Which login?”

Michael hesitated.

“Administrative override.”

“Whose?”

“The system doesn't record the individual when override mode is used.”

“Why?”

“Your family requested that feature years ago.”

Of course.

Privacy.

The Carter family's favorite word whenever transparency became inconvenient.

Daniel asked:

“Can the footage be restored?”

“Possibly.”

“How long?”

“I'm bringing in an outside forensic team.”

“Not family IT.”

“Understood.”

Daniel returned to Emma's room.

Leo was drawing at a small table.

A blue house.

Three people.

Mom.

Dad.

Leo.

Daniel sat beside him.

“Buddy.”

Leo looked up.

“Do you remember Mommy talking to Uncle Adrian?”

“Yes.”

“What did they say?”

Leo shook his head.

“Were they angry?”

“Mommy was.”

“What did Uncle Adrian do?”

“He said she was making trouble.”

Daniel felt cold.

“What kind of trouble?”

“I don't know.”

“Did Mommy answer?”

Leo nodded.

“What did she say?”

Leo concentrated.

“She said... she had proof.”

Daniel stopped.

“Proof of what?”

“I don't know.”

There it was.

Emma had been investigating something.

Daniel searched his memory.

For months she had been distracted.

Working late.

Asking odd questions about Carter Global.

Who approves vendor contracts?

How much authority does Adrian have?

Why does Victoria sit in finance meetings if she doesn't officially work there?

Daniel had dismissed the questions as curiosity.

Emma had studied accounting before becoming a nonprofit consultant.

She understood financial structures.

Perhaps better than Daniel.

Three weeks earlier she asked him:

“Do you ever actually read Adrian's quarterly reports?”

Daniel laughed.

“That's why we have auditors.”

Emma didn't.

He remembered that now.

She had looked disappointed.

At the hospital, doctors updated him.

Emma was stable.

Tests showed traces of a sedative in her bloodstream.

Daniel stared.

“Sedative?”

“A prescription medication.”

“Was it administered here?”

“No.”

“Does she take it?”

“Not according to the medication history you provided.”

Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Emma hadn't simply fallen.

Someone may have drugged her.

Then she suffered a head injury.

The detective assigned to the case arrived immediately after the toxicology update.

Detective Laura Mills listened carefully.

“Who had access to her drinks?”

Daniel thought of the estate breakfast.

Coffee.

Juice.

Water.

Family staff.

Guests.

Anyone.

Leo interrupted.

“Mom didn't drink coffee.”

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

“She had orange juice.”

“Who gave it to her?”

Leo shrugged.

“Grandma.”

Daniel's breathing changed.

Detective Mills noticed.

“Which grandmother?”

“Dad's mom.”

Victoria.

Daniel asked carefully:

“Did Grandma pour it?”

Leo nodded.

“Mommy said it tasted funny.”

Daniel stood.

“Where's the glass?”

The detective immediately contacted the estate team.

The broken glass found beside Emma had been collected.

Residue would be tested.

Victoria was not told.

Daniel remained at the hospital until evening.

Then he returned to the estate alone.

Security escorted him.

The house felt different.

The memorial flowers remained.

Black cars still filled the circular drive.

Family portraits lined the hall.

Daniel suddenly saw them not as heritage.

As witnesses.

Generations of people trained to protect the Carter name.

Adrian waited in the library.

“You froze my access.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel closed the door.

“Emma spoke to you this morning.”

Adrian's expression barely changed.

“So?”

“What about?”

“The memorial.”

“Leo says she told you she had proof.”

Adrian laughed.

“Leo is five.”

“What proof?”

“I have no idea.”

Daniel stared.

“You called her a troublemaker.”

“I've called her worse.”

That honesty almost made him believable.

Adrian poured himself whiskey.

“Emma has been accusing me of financial misconduct for months.”

Daniel froze.

“She told you?”

“Yes.”

“She never told me.”

Adrian smiled.

“Maybe she didn't trust you either.”

The sentence landed.

Daniel hated him for it.

Because it might be true.

“What was she investigating?”

Adrian shrugged.

“Vendor payments.”

“Why?”

“She thought numbers didn't match.”

“Did they?”

“Of course they matched.”

“Then why argue?”

“Because your wife doesn't know when to stop.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian stared.

“It means she threatened to embarrass the family at Grandfather's memorial.”

“With what?”

“She said she had evidence of missing money.”

“How much?”

Adrian said nothing.

“How much?”

“Approximately nine million dollars.”

Daniel felt cold.

Nine million.

“Missing from where?”

“The family foundation.”

Daniel's grandfather had created the Carter Heritage Foundation.

Scholarships.

Hospitals.

Community grants.

Victoria chaired it informally.

Adrian managed finances.

Emma had recently joined an advisory committee.

That gave her access.

Daniel understood.

“She found something.”

“She misunderstood something.”

“Which?”

Adrian finished his drink.

“Ask her when she wakes up.”

Daniel stared.

“Did you touch her drink?”

Adrian's expression changed.

“What?”

“Did you drug my wife?”

Adrian slammed the glass down.

“Are you insane?”

“No.”

“You think I'd drug Emma because she questioned accounts?”

“I think somebody did.”

Adrian went still.

Daniel saw fear.

Not necessarily guilt.

Knowledge.

“You know something.”

“No.”

“Adrian.”

“Daniel, stop.”

“What happened after you spoke to her?”

Adrian looked away.

“She went upstairs.”

“Why?”

“To get something.”

“What?”

“A drive.”

Daniel remembered Emma carrying a small silver USB case for weeks.

“Where is it?”

Adrian stared.

“I don't know.”

Daniel's phone rang.

Michael.

“Sir, forensic recovery worked.”

Daniel stepped away.

“How much?”

“Most of the footage.”

“Send me 8:00 to 8:20.”

A video arrived.

Daniel opened it.

East corridor.

8:02.

Emma walked toward the rear stairs.

Handbag over shoulder.

Silver drive case in hand.

8:04.

Adrian followed.

Daniel looked up at his brother.

Adrian saw the screen.

His face changed.

Daniel continued.

8:05.

Victoria appeared.

Walking quickly.

8:06.

Camera feed glitched.

Then returned.

Emma was no longer standing.

Adrian was crouched near the floor.

Victoria stood beside him.

Neither called for help.

For almost forty seconds.

Then Adrian took something from beside Emma.

The silver case.

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

“Where is the drive?”

May you like

Adrian went pale.

What had Emma copied that made both Adrian and Victoria willing to stand over her without calling for help?
