Chapter 5 - NOT ALONEEmma slept for twelve hours after speaking.

Daniel sat beside her.
Not alone.
Two police officers remained outside.
His personal security guards were gone.
Every guard connected to the Carter family had been reassigned or suspended until vetted.
Daniel no longer trusted inherited systems.
He trusted independent ones.
When Emma woke again, doctors allowed limited questions.
She told the story slowly.
Victoria gave her orange juice at breakfast.
Emma noticed bitterness.
She assumed it was medication residue from vitamins she had taken.
Minutes later, she felt dizzy.
Adrian approached.
He demanded the silver drive.
Emma refused.
Victoria followed them upstairs.
Emma told them both she had copied everything.
Victoria grabbed her handbag.
Emma pulled back.
Then someone came from behind.
A man.
Emma didn't see his face clearly.
He caught her arm.
She jerked away.
Victoria pushed—or shoved at her shoulder.
Emma fell.
Not far.
Enough.
Her head struck the edge of a step.
Her memory blurred afterward.
She remembered Adrian taking the drive.
Victoria telling someone:
“Fix the cameras.”
Then Leo.
Her son crying.
Emma forced herself to stay conscious long enough to tell him:
“Don't trust anyone in this family.”
Then darkness.
Who was the third person?
Emma remembered a ring.
Large.
Gold.
Black stone.
Daniel knew only one family associate who wore it.
Uncle Marcus.
Victoria's younger brother.
Not technically a Carter.
Still family.
Marcus managed family security contracts.
Including the estate camera systems.
Daniel felt sick.
Marcus had access to the override.
He could delete footage.
Investigators questioned him.
At first, he denied being upstairs.
Then recovered security imagery showed him entering the corridor.
He changed his story.
He claimed he heard arguing.
Then tried to separate them.
Emma remembered his hand on her arm.
Marcus insisted he was helping.
But phone records showed Victoria called him nine minutes before the incident.
The call lasted eighteen seconds.
Then she texted:
NOW.
That message destroyed his explanation.
Marcus eventually admitted the camera deletion.
He denied knowing about the sedative.
He denied intending Emma to be hurt.
He said Victoria told him Emma planned to “destroy the family.”
Daniel almost laughed.
Again.
Family.
That word had become justification for everything.
Missing charity money.
Fraud.
Drugging.
Assault.
Cover-up.
Identity theft.
All supposedly in service of family.
Daniel finally understood what Emma had been trying to tell him for years.
The Carter family didn't protect people.
It protected structure.
Reputation.
Hierarchy.
Money.
If a person threatened those things, the person became expendable.
Even Emma.
Maybe someday Daniel too.
The board of Carter Global convened an emergency meeting.
Victoria wanted Daniel to resign from the family company temporarily because of “personal instability.”
That move stunned him.
Even now.
With Emma hospitalized.
With Victoria under investigation.
She still sought control.
Daniel attended remotely from the hospital.
Victoria appeared by counsel.
Adrian had already been suspended.
Daniel spoke once.
“I am requesting an independent forensic audit of every entity controlled directly or indirectly by Carter family members.”
Several directors objected.
“Too broad.”
“Too expensive.”
“Potentially damaging.”
Daniel replied:
“Good.”
Silence.
“If the truth damages us, we deserve the damage.”
The motion narrowly passed.
Forensic auditors entered.
The foundation scandal expanded.
$9.6 million became $14.2 million.
Some money funded legitimate but undisclosed family expenses.
Others went directly to private investments.
Victoria used foundation funds to cover losses in a luxury development.
Adrian received fees.
Marcus's security company received inflated contracts.
Multiple relatives benefited.
Not all knew the source.
Some did.
The Carter Heritage Foundation had become a private family bank disguised as charity.
Emma had found it because a scholarship program suddenly lost funding.
She asked why.
Nobody gave a clear answer.
So she followed invoices.
Daniel had mocked her persistence.
“You're obsessed.”
He remembered saying it.
Now he hated himself for it.
Emma recovered slowly.
One afternoon, when she could speak comfortably, Daniel sat beside her.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Emma looked at him.
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
Daniel frowned.
“You asked about foundation reports.”
“I asked whether you'd believe me if Adrian was stealing.”
He remembered.
At dinner.
Emma had said:
“What if your brother isn't who you think he is?”
Daniel replied:
“Please don't start.”
He closed his eyes.
“I remember.”
Emma looked away.
Daniel's voice broke.
“You stopped telling me because of that?”
“Not one time.”
He knew.
Many.
He had spent years correcting Emma's interpretation of his family.
Mom doesn't mean it.
Adrian is blunt.
Marcus is old-school.
They're family.
Emma had learned there was no point.
Daniel said:
“I failed you before anyone pushed you.”
Emma looked at him.
He continued.
“I didn't cause this.”
“No.”
“But I helped create a house where you didn't think I'd listen.”
Emma's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
That answer hurt.
He needed it to.
He took her hand.
“I don't expect you to trust me because I'm sorry.”
“Good.”
For the first time, Daniel almost smiled.
That sounded like Emma.
She continued.
“I need time.”
“You have it.”
“And Leo.”
“You both do.”
Emma looked toward the window.
“Your mother?”
“Under investigation.”
“Adrian?”
“Cooperating.”
“Marcus?”
“Charged in connection with the cover-up.”
Emma closed her eyes.
Then:
“What about the foundation?”
Daniel told her.
Her expression became devastated.
“Fourteen million?”
“Yes.”
“That money was for children.”
“I know.”
That made her cry more than her own injuries.
Daniel understood why he loved her.
She had nearly died because she refused to ignore missing scholarship money.
And his family called her trouble.
He kissed her hand.
Not dramatically.
Carefully.
Then Emma said:
“There's one more copy.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“The evidence.”
“We have the tie card.”
“Not everything.”
“Where?”
Emma looked toward Leo.
“He has it.”
Daniel felt his stomach drop.
“Where?”
May you like
She smiled weakly.
“Ask him about the dinosaur.”
