She didn’t.
For a while she hated the kitchen.
The blue folder had sat on that table.
She had fallen beside that chair.
The skillet had come from that counter.
Then one morning Rose began crawling.
Right across the same floor.
Claire froze.
Rose slapped both palms on the tile.
Laughed.
Then crawled toward a wooden spoon.
Claire started laughing too.
The kitchen changed.
Not instantly.
But gradually.
A room could carry memory without permanently belonging to the worst thing that happened inside it.
Claire kept the house.
Changed the locks.
Changed the dining table.
Kept the skillet.
That surprised everyone.
“It’s cookware,” she said.
