Chapter 4 - EVAN’S EXPLANATIONEvan requested to see her.

Claire refused twice.
On the third request, she agreed with lawyers present.
He looked terrible.
She didn’t care.
“My mother told me the trust was dangerous.”
Claire said nothing.
“She said if you controlled it alone after the baby was born, I’d have no protection.”
“Protection from what?”
“You.”
Claire almost laughed.
Evan continued.
“She said your father never trusted me.”
“Apparently he had instincts.”
Evan looked down.
Margaret had spent months telling him Claire could leave after the baby arrived and take the house, child and trust.
He became afraid.
Then resentful.
Then willing to rationalize.
The forged version?
Evan admitted he had sent an old signature scan to an attorney recommended by Margaret.
He insisted he never intended to actually use it.
Claire stared.
“You prepared a forged document you never intended to use?”
Silence.
“You watched Harold shove me.”
Evan cried.
“I froze.”
“No.”
Claire spoke softly.
May you like
“You chose.”
That ended the meeting.
