Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA MARGARET FORGOTThe kitchen had cameras.

Margaret knew that.
Which was why she had ordered Evan to turn them off before dinner.
Evan did.
Or thought he did.
The interior cameras were connected to a newer home-security interface.
But the kitchen also had an older backup recorder installed by Claire’s father after a burglary years earlier.
Nobody used it.
Nobody remembered it.
Except the electrician who serviced the house.
When police requested preserved security data, he found the old recorder still functioning.
No audio.
Video was enough.
Margaret grabbing Claire’s hair.
Harold blocking the door.
Harold pushing her.
Evan watching.
Claire holding the skillet.
Margaret pointing toward Harold.
The throw.
Context.
Everything.
Claire watched only once.
The frame she couldn’t forget was not the push.
It was Evan.
Three steps away.
Hands at his sides.
He watched her fall.
Then looked toward his mother before deciding whether to move.
May you like
He chose stillness.
That became the image Claire could not forgive.
