Claire sat upright.
“What happened?”
“Your husband filed for emergency custody.”
Her heart stopped.
“Ethan?”
“Yes.”
“What is he claiming?”
Daniel hesitated.
“He claims you're emotionally unstable.”
Claire laughed in disbelief.
“Of course.”
“He also claims you assaulted Margaret in front of your daughter.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The slap.
She had known it could be used against her.
But there was more.
Daniel sent her the filing.
Claire read every page.
Margaret's version of events was horrifying.
According to the petition, Claire had arrived at the party enraged.
She had attacked Margaret without provocation.
She had frightened Lily.
She had behaved erratically.
Ethan claimed he had tried to protect the child.
Claire stared at the screen.
“They planned this.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Daniel's voice became serious.
“The filing includes statements from two witnesses.”
Claire recognized the names.
Family friends.
People who had been inside the house.
People who had watched Margaret punish Lily before.
They had lied.
Claire felt something inside her become very still.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“Can we prove the restraint was intentional?”
“We can.”
“Can we prove Ethan knew?”
“We're working on it.”
“And the trust?”
“That is the key.”
Claire stood.
“Then let's stop defending myself.”
Daniel paused.
“What do you mean?”
“Let's expose them.”
Over the next forty-eight hours, Daniel built a timeline.
He collected Lily's pediatric records.
Photographs of the marks on her waist.
Messages between Ethan and Margaret.
Security footage.
Witness statements.
The restraint itself.
Most importantly, the recording from Claire's phone.
It showed Margaret saying:
“Bad kids don't get invited to parties.”
Then Claire's voice.
“Who did this to you?”
Then Lily.
“Grandma did. And Dad helped her.”
The recording was devastating.
But Claire still had one problem.
Lily was only four.
The court would not rely solely on a child's statement.
Then Daniel found something else.
A hidden camera.
Margaret had installed one in the backyard.
She had intended to use it against Claire.
Instead, it captured everything.
The chain.
The restraint.
Ethan holding Lily.
Margaret attaching the lock.
And the moment Claire arrived.
Daniel played the footage.
Claire covered her mouth.
She watched Ethan kneel beside Lily.
She watched Margaret say something.
Then Ethan looked toward the house.
He didn't stop her.
He helped secure the chain.
Claire began crying.
Not because she doubted him anymore.
Because she finally knew the truth.
Daniel paused the video.
“There is something else.”
He zoomed in.
Margaret was holding a folder.
Claire recognized it.
“The trust.”
Daniel nodded.
“She brought the documents to the backyard.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“Why?”
“Because she intended to make you angry.”
Daniel opened another file.
“We found an email from Margaret to Ethan.”
The message was simple.
If Claire loses control today, we can finally establish that she is unstable. Then Lily comes under my temporary guardianship, and the trust follows.
Claire closed her eyes.
They had planned the entire thing.
The party.
The punishment.
The provocation.
The witnesses.
Her reaction.
Everything.
The slap had been exactly what they wanted.
Except they had underestimated one thing.
Claire had spent years being told she was too emotional.
But she knew how to preserve evidence.
And now every lie had become evidence against them.
Daniel looked at her.
“The hearing is tomorrow.”
Claire nodded.
“Then tomorrow they lose.”
But there was one thing Claire still didn't know.
Ethan had not only helped Margaret.
He had signed something far more dangerous.
