Chapter 4 - The Birthday TrapThe birthday party had been Margaret's idea.

She insisted on hosting it at the Whitmore estate.
Claire wanted a small party at home.
Lily wanted balloons and cake.
Ethan sided with his mother.
“It's her birthday,” he said.
“Then let her enjoy it.”
“Mom has everything prepared.”
Claire remembered that conversation now.
Every detail had been planned.
The guest list.
The photographer.
The catering staff.
The relatives.
Even the location of Lily's cake.
Margaret had wanted the entire family there.
Not because she loved Lily.
Because she wanted witnesses.
Before leaving for the party, Claire had placed several documents into her handbag.
Daniel had told her not to confront anyone unless necessary.
But he had also warned her.
“Record everything.”
So Claire did.
She arrived late.
She entered through the side gate.
Then she heard Lily crying.
Everything changed.
Now, after Claire threw the trust document at Margaret, the party guests crowded into the backyard.
Nobody knew what to do.
Margaret stood holding the papers.
Ethan approached.
“Mom, what is that?”
Margaret handed him the document.
He read it.
His expression collapsed.
Claire watched him.
“What?”
Ethan looked at her.
“You weren't supposed to have this.”
Claire almost smiled.
“That's what you're worried about?”
Margaret snapped.
“Ethan, don't say anything.”
Claire heard it.
The fear.
Not concern.
Fear.
She turned toward the guests.
“Does anyone here know what happened to my daughter?”
Nobody answered.
Then one of the catering employees stepped forward.
“I saw Mrs. Whitmore put the restraint on her.”
Margaret's eyes widened.
Another guest spoke.
“I heard her say Lily needed to learn obedience.”
Ethan looked horrified.
Claire stared at him.
“You knew.”
“I didn't know she would chain her.”
“You knew she was planning to punish Lily.”
“I thought she was grounding her.”
“With a chain?”
Ethan looked down.
Claire turned to Lily.
“Sweetheart, did Daddy see Grandma put it on you?”
Lily nodded.
“He helped.”
Ethan's face went pale.
“I didn't lock it.”
Lily began crying.
“You held me.”
Silence.
Claire looked at her husband.
“You held our daughter while your mother chained her?”
Ethan's voice broke.
“I was trying to stop her from running.”
Claire stared at him.
“From running where?”
Nobody answered.
Then Margaret screamed.
“This is ridiculous!”
She threw the document onto the table.
“You've manipulated my son.”
Claire's voice was cold.
“No.”
She picked up her phone.
“I documented everything.”
Margaret froze.
“What?”
“The restraint.”
Claire held up the phone.
“The conversations.”
She swiped.
“Your instructions.”
Another swipe.
“Ethan helping you.”
Another.
“The trust documents.”
Margaret's face turned white.
Claire looked at the guests.
“You all heard her say bad children don't get invited to parties.”
Nobody moved.
Claire continued.
“You saw my daughter chained.”
A man near the patio nodded.
“I did.”
Margaret looked around desperately.
“You're all family.”
The man shook his head.
“No.”
Claire stepped forward.
“That's exactly the problem.”
Margaret's expression hardened.
“You think you can take this family from me?”
Claire shook her head.
“You already did.”
She lifted Lily into her arms.
Then she walked toward the gate.
Ethan followed.
“Claire, wait.”
She turned.
“You have one chance.”
“For what?”
“To tell the truth.”
Ethan stared at her.
“I love you.”
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“That isn't enough.”
He looked at Lily.
“I love her.”
“Then why did you help your mother?”
Ethan couldn't answer.
Claire walked away.
Behind her, Margaret screamed.
“You will regret this!”
Claire stopped.
She turned slowly.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You will.”
She left.
But she didn't know that Margaret had one final card.
A card that could destroy Claire's marriage.
May you like
And possibly cost her custody of Lily.
What evidence was Margaret preparing to use against Claire?
