Chapter 8 - THE COPY EMMA KEPTOn Oliver's fifth birthday, Emma found the ruined hospital worksheet.

She had kept it inside a blue folder.

Damian Cross.

Written confidently on the wrong line.

Oliver saw it.

“Who's that?”

“Uncle Damian.”

“Why is his name where Daddy's goes?”

Emma laughed.

“Because Uncle Damian did something very silly.”

Damian had become “Uncle” naturally.

Not father.

Not replacement.

Family.

Oliver adored his tattoos.

At four, he asked whether Damian had drawn them with markers.

Damian said yes.

Emma corrected him immediately.

Now Oliver wanted temporary dinosaur tattoos covering both arms whenever Damian visited.

Emma showed Damian the paper later.

“You want this?”

“Burn it.”

“No.”

“Why keep evidence of my stupidity?”

Emma smiled.

“Because I thought that was the moment someone rescued me.”

Damian looked at her.

“And now?”

“Now I know nobody rescued me.”

He smiled slightly.

“Good.”

“You helped.”

“Different.”

“Very.”

Emma folded the paper.

“The important thing wasn't your signature.”

“What was?”

“That somebody looked at what happened and said it was wrong.”

Damian became quiet.

Emma continued.

“I'd spent so long explaining Richard to myself that I'd forgotten cruelty could just be called cruelty.”

Damian nodded.

That was why she kept it.

Not because Damian became Oliver's father.

He didn't.

Not because a mysterious rich man replaced a bad husband.

May you like

He didn't.

The paper marked the first moment Emma stopped translating Richard's behavior into excuses.
