Chapter 5 - DAMIAN CROSSEmma eventually asked the question everyone else seemed to avoid.

“Why all the tattoos?”
Damian looked up from his coffee.
“That's your question?”
“You signed my son's birth worksheet illegally enough to make a nurse nearly throw you out, you're secretly controlling shareholder of a billion-dollar company, and your face looks like an art gallery. Yes.”
Damian laughed.
It was the first time Emma heard it.
The tattoos weren't one story.
Some were stupid teenage decisions.
Some memorials.
His mother's name.
Military service symbols from years before entering the family business.
A raven for a friend who died.
A date beneath his collar.
“What date?”
“My daughter's birthday.”
Emma stopped.
“You have a daughter?”
“Had.”
The word changed the room.
Damian's daughter, Sophie, died at four from a rare illness.
His marriage collapsed afterward.
He stopped appearing publicly.
Richard used Damian's withdrawal to strengthen his own position inside Cross Meridian.
Emma suddenly understood the hospital.
The newborn.
The father line.
“You saw Sophie.”
Damian looked away.
“I saw a mother on the floor protecting her baby while the father walked away.”
Emma said nothing.
Damian continued.
“I would've given everything for one more day with my daughter.”
His jaw tightened.
“Watching Richard discard his son because the timing was convenient made me angry.”
“So you signed.”
“Like an idiot.”
Emma smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Like an idiot.”
No romance followed.
That mattered.
Emma was vulnerable.
Damian knew it.
He never used kindness to create debt.
He didn't flirt.
Didn't become Oliver's replacement father.
Didn't ask Emma to choose him.
He helped because he chose to.
That allowed Emma to accept help without surrendering herself.
Months passed.
Oliver grew.
Emma recovered physically.
She rented her own apartment rather than remain indefinitely at Damian's guest property.
She returned to work part-time as a graphic designer.
Richard hated that.
Not the job.
The independence.
His messages became increasingly frustrated.
You don't need to work.
Emma laughed.
He had emptied their account and then told her she didn't need income.
Rebecca handled financial proceedings.
Much of the transferred marital money was eventually accounted for through court-supervised processes.
Richard couldn't simply make it vanish by moving it.
Meanwhile, Cross Meridian's investigation concluded.
Richard had misused corporate resources.
Misrepresented expenses.
Attempted to involve company legal staff in personal matters.
The board terminated him.
Damian abstained from portions where his conflict was obvious.
Emma respected that.
Richard couldn't claim Damian simply snapped his fingers.
Records did the damage.
Again.
Records.
Vanessa left Richard two weeks after the termination became public inside their social circle.
She sent Emma one message first.
You ruined his life.
Emma stared at it.
Then typed something.
Deleted it.
Typed again.
Deleted.
Finally she sent nothing.
Richard's life was not Emma's project anymore.
Neither construction nor destruction.

That freedom felt unfamiliar.
Wonderful.
