Chapter 6 - THE PATERNITY LINEOliver was eight months old when Richard raised Damian's hospital signature in court.

His attorney argued Emma had encouraged another man to assume a paternal role immediately after birth.
Rebecca nearly smiled.
The actual hospital administrator testified.
Damian's signature had never entered the official birth record.
A clean form replaced it immediately.
Richard remained correctly identified through lawful procedures.
Emma had not asked Damian to sign.
The hallway circumstances were documented.
The argument collapsed.
Outside court, Emma confronted Damian.
“I told you that stupid signature would come back.”
“You did.”
“You caused three hours of legal argument.”
“I know.”
“You owe me lunch.”
“Fair.”
They ate sandwiches.
Oliver threw mashed banana onto Damian's sleeve.
Emma laughed until she cried.
Damian stared at the stain.
“Your son has strong opinions.”
“Your suit deserved it.”
Then Oliver reached toward him.
Damian froze.
Emma noticed.
“It's okay.”
Damian didn't move.
Oliver reached again.
Damian slowly offered one finger.
The baby grabbed it.
Something passed across Damian's face.
Grief.
Love.
Fear.
Emma looked away to give him privacy.
Later Damian said:
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Not making that moment bigger than it was.”
Emma understood.
Healing didn't need narration every time.
